Our goal is for Bjørvika to be a pioneer for environment and sustainable development. Bjørvika Utvikling’s commons spaces and water promenade help to regain contact between the city and the fjord. We facilitate close contact between people and water, for instance at the park and swimming area at the tip of Sørenga, and at Akerselva’s outlet.
Important environmental measures at the beginning were the development of the tunnel under Bjørvika, which contributes to 80% of traffic being removed and thus less air pollution, noise and better for recreation and walking. Contaminated sediments in the inner Oslo fjord have also been removed or covered with pure masses, so the fjord is now so clean that you can swim here.
Environmental ambitions are gathered in an environmental monitoring program, and Bjørvika Utvikling is responsible for the coordination of this program. The program was revised in 2012 to ensure that Bjørvika continues to be a pioneer area for environment and sustainable development. The property developers themselves took the initiative to raise environmental ambitions. The environmental audit entails new and more ambitious targets for the topics of energy, greenhouse gas emissions, hub development and materials, and related recommendations for measures.

“An important part of Bjørvika Utvikling’s environmental profile is that we have zero tolerance for polluting emissions and that we use a lot of recycled steel, environmentally friendly wood and low carbon concrete. Public transport and bicycling is furthermore emphasised in Bjørvika,»says Asbjørg Næss, environmental manager.
